Walls

The campaign “stay at home” launched during the lockdown to fight the pandemic, was not a safe invitation for women that are victims of violence. For those women the home walls often turned into a prison and, in some cases, that meant their death sentence.

The theme of domestic violence showed all its dramatic nature during the pandemic, emphasizing how the control of space can evolve in control of women bodies, perceived as objects to be owned and managed. According to data from the Department of Equal Opportunities, calls to the anti-violence aid number in March and in the first half of April 2020 increased by more than 64%, compared to the same period of 2019. In the first three months of lock-down, aggressions and feminicides increased by 20% in all 193 UN member states.
