About us

MOTUS is a dance company based in Siena (Italy) supported by Tuscany Region, with artistic residencies in Italy and abroad.

Featuring a repertoire rich in collaboration with composers and artists, the Company has embraced the search for new vocabularies where the body language is used to treat arguments of social impact.

crash_5MOTUS was founded by Simona Cieri, choreographer and dancer with a strong classical background, who subsequently studied in depth modern, jazz and contemporary dance.
The Company, firstly named Duncaniando, begun the artistic activity in 1991 but in 1994, as the company quickly grew to be recognised as one of the most interesting young dance companies in Italy, the Company was given the new name of MOTUS.

Under this name, MOTUS tour extensively to all major theatres in Italy and abroad and by invitation to international festivals.

The work of the MOTUS Company is well estimated in various countries (Albania, Bosnia Herzegovina, Germany, Greece, India, Kosovo, Portugal, Romania, Singapore, Slovenia, Spain, The Netherlands, United Kingdom, USA) as shown by international recognitions.

In 1994, the Company was awarded with the National Prize for Choreography (Spello)

In 2006 and 2008, the Company received the International Prize TEATARFEST.

In 2009 and in 2010, the Company was awarded  with two official praises of the President of the Italian Republic for the plays “Iris under the sea” and “Della tua carne-Just’us” respectively.

From 2009 the MOTUS Company directs and organizes the Move Off International Festival.

In 2011, the book VENTI DI MOTUS (20 of MOTUS) written by Prof. Andrea Mancini about 20 years’ activity of the MOTUS Company was published.

In 2022 MOTUS received the Lifetime Achievement Award “Bulli ed Eroi”

In 2021, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Company, the book “TRENTA DI MOTUS” was published by “La Conchiglia di Santiago”.

Whether in abstract dance or dance theatre, they produce work that has theatrical and emotional impact.
