Move Off: dance against gender discrimination

On May 14, at 9.30 pm, the International contemporary dance festival “Move Off”, directed by the MOTUS Company and organized in collaboration with the Castelnuovo Berardenga Municipality, with the support of ChiantiBanca, brings to the stage of Vittorio Alfieri Municipal Theatre two dance shows against gender discrimination.

In the first part of the evening, the Kinesis Contemporary Dance Company presents “Fa’atama”, a show choreographed by Angelo Egarese and inspired by the book “Matalasi” by Jenny Bennett-Tuionetoa, a human rights activist who wants to raise awareness on LGBTQIA issues . “Matalasi” tells the life of a “fa’atama”, a Samoan term for people born women who identify and/or behave like a man. A story that denounces the conformism and the tragic condition of individuals forced to choose between identity and survival. The show is performed by Anna Pesetti and Francesca Piergiacomo and is produced by Kinesis CDC, MIC Ministry of Italian Culture, Tuscany Region, CR Foundation of Florence, Florence Dance Festival, with the support of the Affratellamento Theater, D.A.C. and Firenze Dance Center. The show replaces the show “1943” by the company FloDance 2.0, canceled due to an injury.

In the second part of the evening, the MOTUS Company presents “The Divina’s”, a show produced by MOTUS with the support of the Tuscany Region, choreographed by Martina Agricoli and directed by Rosanna and Simona Cieri, which analyzes the characters of the Divina Commedia as symbols of gender violence. “The Divina’s” brings to the stage, with a contemporary choreographic language, the stereotypes that for centuries have labeled women who have suffered violence, interpreted by Martina Agricoli, Paloma Biagioli, Ilaria Fratantuono, Roberta Morello and Mattia Solano. Stereotypes such as the phrase “she’s been looking for it” with which women are accused of having provoked the aggressor because they were too beautiful or too undressed. Or the phrase “did you feel pleasure?”, prononced by judges during rape trials, implying active and consenting participation in the violent sexual act. Thus the public discovers the story of Lucrezia, a Roman noblewoman, wife of Collatino, who committed suicide in front of her husband to demonstrate her extraneousness to the violence committed by Sesto Tarquinio. Or the story of Penthesilea, queen of the Amazons, condemned by the goddess Aphrodite to suffer violence by all men who have seen her face. She hided herself in an armor and fighted in the war of Troy, but she was raped by Achilles, after being killed.

The next event of the Move Off Festival will take place on May 31st at 9.30 pm with the show “Fisiognomica” of the Petranuradanza / Megakles Ballet Company, choreographed by Salvatore Romania and Laura Odierna. The show is inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s analysis of the motions of the human soul. In the second part of the evening, the MOTUS Company will presents “Work in progress”, a taste of the new work of the Company, choreographed by Simona Cieri.

Ticket price: € 10 (reduced € 8, special reduced € 5).
